Whether you’re working on a blanket, scarf, or any decorative piece, starting with a smooth, even chain is essential for your projects final appearance. The chain stitch forms the backbone of your crochet work, acting as the base for subsequent rows. Getting these consistent will help your crochet project achieve a neat and uniform start.. Here’s a detailed guide to mastering the chain stitch, to get your crochet creations off to a great start.
Things You’ll Need
You’ll need some yarn and a hook, a thicker light coloured yarn and a larger hook are easier to begin with. I’d suggest beginning with:
- Yarn: 8ply – equivalent yarns in other countries could be a DK yarn, light worsted yarn, medium-weight yarn.
- Crochet hook: 5mm (or one close to this size ie 4mm-6mm) – equivalent to a US H/8 – UK6.

Forming the Chain
- Yarn over: With your hook in one hand, yarn in the other and a slip knot on your hook, now move the yarn over your hook ((known as “yarn over” in pattens).
- Pull through loop: Use the hook to pull the yarn through the loop already on your hook.
- Repeat: Continue this process (yarn over and pull through) to create a series of chain stitches.

Adjusting Chain Stitches for Different Projects
The number of chain stitches you start with will vary depending on the project. For instance, a scarf might require fewer chains than a blanket. Always refer to your pattern for the exact number of initial chains.
Tips for Perfect Chain Stitches
- Maintain even tension: Practice keeping how tightly or loosely you hold your yarn consistent, so you can achieve more uniform chain stitches.
- Rhythm: Try to find a comfortable rhythm that suits your crocheting style, this will also help you creat even stitches. Just go slowly to start with, speed will come later as your techniques and confidence improve.
- Practice: Be patient with yourself, the more you practice the more natural it will feel and the better your projects will turn out.
By starting with a strong foundation in chain stitching, you set yourself up for success in crochet. Take your time, be patient with yourself, and enjoy the journey of creating beautiful handmade items!
